Rope Lock

Handling high tension loads requires special attention. Our patented Rope Lock (also known as the SHM T-lock) allows ropes and hawsers to be secured outside the vessel's main deck, so that your crew can operate from a safe zone.

What makes it unique

SHM Mooring System

Used together on the same system, our mooring lock, towing pins, and rope lock give you a safer and more efficient operation.

1. The rope is placed in the side gate with rope pins to secure the rope tension along the vessel

2. The mooring lock is extended outboard and the plate is locked

3. The rope is lifted into the rope lock and secured

4. The mooring lock is retracted, creating approximately 1.5 m of slack in the rope

5. It is now safe to work with both the plate and the rope

The harder you pull, the tighter it holds.

That is the logic of a self-tightening climbing knot – and the principle behind the SHM T-lock (also known as the SHM Rope lock) which quickly became an industry standard and is named after our own engineer Torbjørn Letrud.

When he joined SHM 10 years ago, a cardboard tube model sat on a table in the office. It represented a machine under development – aiming to provide safe and simple rope locking on the deck of a vessel. The problem was that it needed several metres of rope to build up enough friction surface for holding strength, making it difficult to calculate the correct tension in the rope after release.
